Winter property maintenance tips

Our British weather can be pretty unpredictable. Beautiful summer weather in the middle of October can easily turn to torrential down pours or icy conditions.

Making sure your property is in tip top condition now means that your home will be protected from some of the top issues we get called out about during the long winter months.

Here’s out top tips to maintaining your home this season and for anything you can’t do we’re here to help.

1. Insulate your home

Everyone knows it, but one of the best ways to keep your home warm and comfortable in the winter is to make sure it’s well-insulated. But you may not know that loft insulation can degrade over time, due to moisture, pests or compression from stored items. Check your insulation now to see if it’s still doing what it should do.

2. Seal any cracks or gaps

Any cracks or gaps in your home’s exterior can allow cold air to seep in and warm air to escape. Sometimes during extreme summer heat – we’re thinking about to 2022’s 40 degree temperatures, cracks and gaps can get worse. Identify where air may be coming in and out of your home to stop a loss of heat during the colder months.

3. Clean your gutters

Clogged gutters full of winter leaves, moss or other foliage can back up and cause water damage to your roof and foundations. Getting your gutters cleaned before the start of winter is really important to protecting your property from the elements and making sure everything work as it should.

4. Trim your trees

Overgrown trees and bushes can pose a hazard in the winter when snow falls or there’s gale force winds predicted. Trim your trees back now to ensure there’s no damage to your property or power lines during a storm.

5. Protect your pipes

Frozen pipes can burst and cause serious water damage to your home. Exposed pipes should be wrapped with insulation as standard, if they’re not you should do this immediately. Make sure you know where your stop cock is in your home.

6. Check your heating system

Months of hot weather may mean you haven’t switched your central heating system on. It’s always a good time to get your annual service done before the winter to make sure everything works as it should – always get a certified professional to carry out these works.
